Gjirokastra
“The city in stone”
Lies in the southern part of Albania. Given its strategic position, its history as a dwelling place commences in the 1-st century A.D. Gjirokastra has the characteristic houses that resemble tiny castles built one above the other, with their many windows and roof made of stone. The main sight of interest for visitors is the castle of Gjirokastra (otherwise called the castle of Argjiro), the biggest in Albania. Built in the 4-th century, it represent one of the most imposing castle in Albania. It stands on a hilltop and allow the visitors to enjoy the view of the city and the valley of the Drino river. Inside the castle lied the National Museum of Weaponry, which has on display various types of weapons used in Albania from Neolithic period to the second World war. In Gjirokaster you can visit also the Ethnographic Museum.
